There are three hydro-power turbines working in Belper. They are the two operating alongside each other at Belper’s East Mill and one housed in a turbine shed behind the Mill pub at Milford. They are all operated by Derwent Hydro.

The two at the East Mill have a combined capacity of 209 kW whilst the single Milford turbine has a 253 kW. When in full flow they have a combined capability of providing electricity to the equivalent of 385 homes. With the lack of rain in 2011 one of the East Mill turbines was shut down whilst the other was only producing about 60kW.

There are two main factors that determine how much electricity can be produced:

  • Head – the distance water falls to move the turbine
  • Flow rate – how fast the water is flowing

The head at East Mill is 4.11 metres whilst at Milford it is slightly higher at 4.27m. The flow rate at Milford is a fierce 7.26 m3 per second with East Mill slightly more genteel at 6.2 m3 per second.

Climate East Midlands river barrier study
In autumn of 2011 Transition Belper members helped with a study of river barriers in the East Midlands by taking on the task of surveying every accessible weir or barrier in Amber Valley, taking photos and reporting back.

Solar pv
Solar panels are becoming an increasingly visible in the Belper area and, with panel prices expected to tumble, this trend may well continue - once the debacle over the Government’s Feed in Tariff proposals and consultation is finally resolved.

Solar panel installers generally reckon that between 15 and 25 per cent of all buildings have a roof orientation somewhere between ESE and WSW and are ideal, or thereabouts, for generating electricity. This would mean that Belper has the potential to install solar panels on about 2,000 roofs.

So far they are a small number but we’d like to map where they are so that everyone can see their increasing prevalence. If you know of a roof with solar panels please take a photo and send it to us along with the address, postcode or street and we’ll start building the map.
