Transition Belper win national funding bid, supporting community action on energy efficiency and renewable energy.

On Monday 6th February, Transition Belper learnt they were one of dozens of community groups in the UK to win a share of the Local Energy Assessment Fund – seeding community energy action. Winning the bid allowed the Belper group to complete a number of major projects to help accelerate Belper’s progress to becoming a lower carbon community, where energy supply is both secure and affordable.

This is how the projects panned out:

  • An aerial thermal survey of Belper that could have shown where occupied buildings were leaking heat could not go ahead. There were no suitable weather conditions before the end of March. Instead we have purchased our own thermal image camera that we will be able to use around Belper from October onwards.
  • A desk top Solar PV opportunities survey for Belper. We have, at our fingertips, data about the potential for solar panels on every building in Belper including possible costs and income levels from generating electricity. Around 60 percent of all buildings are suitable for solar panels. To get results for your property please contact us.
  • A hydro power opportunities survey for the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site corridor (from Masson Mills to the Silk Mill). This includes tributaries of the River Derwent as well as the Derwent itsellf,
  • A solid wall insulation case study and show home. We now have a practical example of how insulating the walls of older, solid walled, buildings can save energy and money,
  • Produced a planning guidance document on the installation of energy saving measures and renewable energy generation equipment in the World Heritage Corridor and Conservation Area that sets out clearly what does and does not need Planning permission
  • Training for the first 10 Energy Expert Neighbour volunteers - see our EEN Project page for details.
  • Public meetings and an Energy Advice Surgery to explain the results of the surveys and to get your views of what to do next

As the schemes progress we'll add photos and details here:
